You ever watch a documentary where at the end you are genuinely concerned about the people that exist in today’s society? That’s exactly how I felt after I watched “I Think We’re Alone Now”.
“I Think We’re Alone Now” shows the lives of two individuals, Jeff and Kelly who are obsessed with Tiffany. No, not the jewelry company; Tiffany, as in Tiffany Darwish, as in the 80s pop star know for her hits “I Think We’re Alone Now,” “Could’ve Been” and “I Saw Him Standing There,” as in the girl who had one successful mall tour and then in the 2000s posed for Playboy.
I’m not going to get too deep into the documentary even though it was pretty great and I recommend everyone takes the time to watch it. I was more concerned with how Jeff was CONVINCED Tiffany was his best friend and soul mate and how Kelly, a transvestite was convinced he/she was supposed to spend the rest of his/her life with Tiffany. Where do people get these ideas? How is that acceptable? How are these people not locked up and kept away from civilization?
Maybe the fact that Jeff has Asperger’s adds to the obsession, but why hasn’t anyone told him that Tiffany is not his BFF? Why does his family allow this to go on? And yes, Kelly was in vehicular accident and woke up to a Tiffany song when (s)he came out of a coma, but when (s)he says that (s)he has been BFFs with Tiffany since his/her teenage years, we have a problem. How can you be besties with someone you have never met?
I’m sorry, I may be lacking empathy and sensitivity to their mental instability and understanding that they were both extremely sick. HOWEVER, where are the doctors? The families? The therapists handling this situation? I couldn’t deal with that part of the documentary. Why is this okay?
Overall, I would give this 4.5 out of 5 stars. It was a great story to watch, and even tough I didn’t understand the main characters, I can recognize that this is a great story. Make sure you watch this; it’s on Netflix!
Spoiler Alert: Not only is Jeff obsessed with Tiffany, but he said that if he had to choose between marying her or Alyssa Milano, he’d marry Alyssa since she’s his soulmate…
